Ebony Lacquered Hollywood Regency Louis XVI Style Crank Dining Table M. Jansen
A very fine ebony lacquered Hollywood Regency Louis XVI style crank two leaf dining table in the manner of Maison Jansen. Having recently been given a Steinway Grand black finish this wonderful Double 21 inch leaf dining table is certain to shine in any setting. The easily rolling casters flow with a long antique crank so simple that a child can set the table. The tapering Louis XVI style legs with reeded lines terminating in a bulbous top leading to bronze cookie cutter corners. The whole supporting a table top that is utterly magnificent. The reverse bearing the famed Mellier & Co London Label signifying extraordinary quality.
French born, Charles Mellier moved to England, worked for, and eventually took over the illustrious Anglo-French cabinet makers Monbro and Company, circa 1870. Working from Frith Street and later Margaret Street, he soon became a major force in designing and making furniture, and executing grand decorative schemes. The company furnished the great cross- Atlantic liner Mauretania and exhibited at the 1904 International Exhibition in St Louis.
Cabinet makers and interior decorators, of Cavendish Square, London, founded by a Frenchman, Charles Mellier (1827-1887?). The company embellished many fashionable interiors in Britain in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and also decorated rooms for Charles Cecil Guinness, lst Viscount Iveagh, at Farmleigh House on the outskirts of Dublin, circa 1892.(1)
